SEO & AEO
SEO vs AEO: What’s the Difference, and Does Your Business Need Both?
In a nutshell: SEO helps you rank in Google’s list of results. AEO helps AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews understand and recommend you. They share the same foundations, so most businesses should treat them as one strategy, not two.
Search has changed — but not completely
For twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking on page one of Google. That still matters. But more of your customers now ask questions a different way — they type a full question into ChatGPT, read an AI Overview at the top of Google, or ask a voice assistant for a recommendation. Instead of a list of ten links, they get a single answer.
That shift is why you’re hearing a new term: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation.
What SEO actually does
Search Engine Optimisation is the work of helping search engines find, understand and rank your website. Done properly, it covers four areas:
- Technical health — speed, mobile usability and a structure search engines can crawl.
- Content — pages built around what your customers actually search for.
- Local presence — your Google Business Profile, directory listings and location pages.
- Authority — relevant links and mentions that show your business is trusted.
The goal of SEO is a click: someone sees your listing, visits your site and gets in touch.
What AEO does differently
AEO is about being the answer rather than one of the results. AI tools read the web, decide which sources they trust, and summarise. If your business is described clearly and consistently, you’re more likely to be mentioned. If it isn’t, the AI simply recommends someone else.
- Answer-ready content — clear, direct answers to the questions customers really ask.
- Structured data — schema markup that tells machines who you are, what you offer and where.
- Consistency — the same name, services and contact details everywhere you appear.
- Trust signals — reviews, credentials and clear authorship.
The overlap is bigger than the difference
Here’s the honest part: good AEO is mostly good SEO, done thoroughly. Both reward fast, well-structured websites, genuinely useful content and a trustworthy reputation. An agency that sells AEO as a completely separate, expensive product is usually overcomplicating it.
Where they differ is emphasis. SEO leans on keywords and rankings. AEO leans on clarity, structure and being quotable — writing a direct two-sentence answer to “how much does a website cost in Manchester?” rather than burying it in paragraph six.
So which does your business need?
- Starting from scratch? Fix the SEO foundations first. AEO won’t help a slow site that search engines can’t crawl.
- Already ranking reasonably well? Adding answer-style content and schema is often a quick, low-cost win.
- Rely on local customers? Both matter. Google Maps, AI Overviews and voice assistants all draw on the same local signals.
Three things you can do this week
- Add an FAQ section to your key service pages, answering the questions customers ask you on the phone.
- Check that your business name, address and phone number match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Search for your own services in ChatGPT and Google — note who gets recommended, and why.
If you’d like a comprehensive view of where you stand on both, we’re happy to take a look — no jargon, no obligation.
