Do You Really Need a New Website? 7 Honest Questions to Ask First
In a nutshell: a new website isn’t always the answer. Sometimes a few targeted fixes will do more for your enquiries — for a fraction of the cost. These questions help you work out which is which.
We get asked this a lot, and our answer surprises people: often, no. A rebuild is a big investment, and if the real problem is something smaller, a shiny new design won’t fix it. Before you spend, ask yourself these seven questions.
1. What problem are you actually trying to solve?
“The website looks dated” and “the website doesn’t bring in enquiries” are very different problems. The first might need a redesign. The second might need better content, clearer calls to action or SEO work — none of which require starting over.
2. Is it slow, especially on a phone?
Most visitors will find you on their phone. If pages take more than a few seconds to load, people leave before they’ve read a word. Speed problems can often be fixed — image optimisation, better hosting, removing heavy plugins — without a rebuild. But if the site sits on an outdated platform that simply can’t be sped up, that’s a genuine reason to start fresh.
3. Can you update it yourself?
If changing a price or adding a photo means emailing a developer and waiting a week, your website is costing you time and money every month. A modern, easy-to-edit site is one of the strongest arguments for a rebuild.
4. Does it still describe what you do?
Businesses evolve. If your services, pricing or customers have changed and the website hasn’t kept up, you may only need new content and a few new pages — not a new site.
5. Is it secure and still supported?
An unsupported theme, outdated plugins or a missing SSL certificate are real risks — to your customers’ data and to your Google rankings. If the platform itself is no longer maintained, rebuilding is usually the safer long-term choice.
6. Do people who visit actually get in touch?
Look at the numbers if you have them. Plenty of visitors but few enquiries usually points to messaging, trust signals or the contact process — all fixable. Very few visitors is a visibility problem, and SEO will do more for you than design.
7. Does it reflect the quality of your work?
This one matters, especially for premium and luxury businesses. If your website feels cheaper than what you actually deliver, it quietly undermines every enquiry. That’s a legitimate reason to invest in a proper redesign.
So — fix or rebuild?
- Mostly fix if the site is modern, secure and easy to edit, but underperforming. Improve the content, speed and calls to action.
- Mostly rebuild if the platform is outdated, you can’t edit it, it’s slow at its core, or it no longer reflects your business.
If you’re not sure which side you fall on, that’s exactly the kind of question we’re happy to answer honestly — even when the answer is “you don’t need us yet.”
